IELTS Speaking Practice Test 4 · Part 1

Part 1: questions about you

4 to 5 minutes.

  • Let's talk about your hometown. What kind of place is your hometown?

  • What do you like most about it?

  • Has your hometown changed much in recent years?

  • Is it a good place for young people to live?

  • Now let's talk about reading. Do you enjoy reading?

  • What kinds of things do you usually read?

  • Do you prefer reading on paper or on a screen?

  • Did you read a lot when you were a child?

  • Let's move on to talk about sleep. How many hours do you usually sleep at night?

  • Do you ever have a nap during the day?

  • What do you do if you can't get to sleep?

How to answer

  • Answer in two or three sentences: your answer, a reason and an example.
  • Speak naturally. Short answers like “Yes” are too short.

Part 2: talk about a topic

1 minute to prepare, then talk for 1 to 2 minutes.

Describe an older person you know and admire.

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • how you know this person
  • what this person is like

and and explain why you admire this person.

Then the examiner may ask:

  • Do you spend much time with older people?

How to answer

  • Use the minute to write key words for each point, not full sentences.
  • Talk for the full two minutes. If you stop early, add a story or a feeling.

Part 3: a discussion

4 to 5 minutes.

  • Let's consider first of all older people in society. What can young people learn from older people?

  • Do you think older people are respected less than they were in the past?

  • In many countries, people are living longer than before. How does this affect families?

  • Now let's talk about different generations. Why do young people and older people sometimes find it hard to understand each other?

  • Is it better for grandparents to live with their family or on their own?

  • Do you think the gap between generations will become bigger or smaller in the future?

How to answer

  • Give your view, say why, and give an example.
  • Talk about people in general, not only about yourself.
