IELTS Speaking Practice Test 1 · Part 1

Part 1: questions about you

4 to 5 minutes.

  • Let's talk about where you live. Do you live in a house or a flat?

  • What do you like most about the area where you live?

  • Is there anything you would like to change about your home?

  • Do you think you'll still live there in five years' time?

  • Now let's talk about the weather. What kind of weather do you like best?

  • Does the weather ever change your mood?

  • What do people in your country usually do when it's very hot?

  • Let's move on to talk about photographs. How often do you take photos?

  • What do you usually do with the photos you take?

  • Do you prefer taking photos of people or of places?

  • Is there a photo in your home that's special to you?

How to answer

  • Answer in two or three sentences: your answer, a reason and an example.
  • Speak naturally. Short answers like “Yes” are too short.

Part 2: talk about a topic

1 minute to prepare, then talk for 1 to 2 minutes.

Describe a time when you helped someone.

You should say:

  • who you helped
  • what the situation was
  • how you helped this person

and and explain how you felt about helping them.

Then the examiner may ask:

  • Do you often help other people?

How to answer

  • Use the minute to write key words for each point, not full sentences.
  • Talk for the full two minutes. If you stop early, add a story or a feeling.

IELTS Speaking Practice Test 1 · Part 3

Part 3: a discussion

4 to 5 minutes.

  • Let's consider first of all helping people in the community. Why do some people enjoy doing voluntary work?

  • Do you think neighbours help each other less than they did in the past?

  • Should schools teach children to help other people? How could they do this?

  • Now let's talk about jobs that involve helping people. Some people believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness. What's your opinion?

  • Which jobs do you think are the most important for helping people in society?

  • Should people in caring jobs, such as nurses, be paid more than they are now?

How to answer

  • Give your view, say why, and give an example.
  • Talk about people in general, not only about yourself.
