Free IELTS Writing Checker
Our free IELTS Writing Checker gives you an estimated band for your Task 1 or Task 2 answer. You see a band for each of the four criteria, and also the one change that will help you most.
Example estimate · Task 2
What you get: a band like 7.0
This is a solid Band 7-level essay with a clear position, good organisation and mostly accurate grammar, held back by a thin counterargument and some repeated vocabulary.
Task Response7
You answer the question with a clear view and give two well-explained reasons, but the other side is only briefly mentioned and not fully explored.
Coherence and Cohesion7
Your essay has a clear plan, with one main idea per paragraph and linkers such as ‘however’ and ‘as a result’ used well.
Lexical Resource6
You use some good words like ‘capable’, ‘public expense’ and ‘frightening’, but you repeat ‘free university education’ and ‘government’ often.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy7
You use a good mix of complex sentences, and most of them are correct, with only small errors.
The one fix that helps most
Give the opposite view a full paragraph of its own, with one clear reason and an example, and then answer it. Also replace repeated phrases like ‘free university education’ with synonyms such as ‘tuition-free study’ or ‘publicly funded degrees’.

What the IELTS Writing Checker looks at
IELTS marks Writing on four criteria, and each one counts the same. So the checker also gives each criterion a band, just like the official IELTS band descriptors. Then it works out your band for the task. In addition, our guide to the IELTS Writing band descriptors explains each band in simple English.
Task Response
Do you answer every part of the question, with a clear position and ideas you develop? For Task 1, it is called Task Achievement instead.
Coherence and Cohesion
Are your paragraphs clear, and do your ideas follow a logical order with good linking words?
Lexical Resource
Is your vocabulary wide and correct, with good spelling and natural word choice?
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Do you use different sentence types, and are most of your sentences free of errors?
Practise on the real computer-test screen
However, the checker marks only one answer. So, to practise the whole test, take one of our free Writing tests. They also look and work like the real IELTS on computer, with the timer and the word count. Then paste your answer here, so you also get a band.

Questions about the IELTS Writing Checker
Is the IELTS Writing Checker really free?
Yes. Every person gets one free check a day, with no sign-up and no payment. We give 200 free checks a day in total, so when they are used up, please come back the next day.
How accurate is the band?
It is an estimate. Our AI marks your answer with the public IELTS band descriptors. For example, it gave our band 7 sample essay a 7. However, only the real test gives you an official score.
Can the IELTS Writing Checker mark Task 1?
Yes, both kinds. It marks General Training letters and also Academic reports. For a report, however, it cannot see the chart, so it does not check your numbers.
Do you keep my essay?
No. Your answer goes to our AI to be marked, and then it is gone. Instead, we only count how many checks were used each day.
What is the difference from the $4 feedback?
The free check gives you a band for each criterion and one fix. The $4 feedback, however, marks both tasks of Writing Practice Test 1 with our best AI. It also quotes your sentences and shows you how to correct each one.
