Selling your unwanted things: five websites compared

Clearing out your cupboards? Selling things you no longer need is a good way to make some extra money and to stop useful items from going to waste. We compared five popular websites. Whichever you choose, take clear photographs of each item in good light and describe any faults honestly, as buyers can usually leave reviews of the people they buy from.

Sellit

AThe biggest site of its kind, Sellit attracts buyers from all over the country, so even unusual items are likely to find a buyer. Listing an item is free, but the site takes 12% of the final price when something is sold. Sellers must post items to buyers within three days of a sale, or their account may be suspended.

LocalLoop

BThis site only shows items to people who live within ten miles of the seller, and buyers are expected to collect their purchases in person. That makes it ideal for furniture and other large items that would be expensive to post. There are no fees of any kind, although you can pay £1 to have your advert shown at the top of the page for a week.

Wardrobe Swap

CAs its name suggests, this site deals only in clothes, shoes and accessories. Instead of paying money, members exchange items using points, which they earn by sending in their own clothes. Every item is checked by the site's staff before it is listed, so you can be confident that what you receive is in good condition.

TechBack

DTechBack buys old phones, tablets and laptops directly from the public. You enter the model and its condition on the website and receive an instant price; the site then sends you a free envelope in which to post the device. Payment is made within two days of the device arriving, but if it turns out to be in worse condition than you described, the price will be reduced. Broken devices are also accepted and are recycled if they cannot be repaired.

Shelf Life

EThis site specialises in second-hand books, music and films. You simply scan the barcode on each item with your phone to see how much the site will pay, which is usually only a small amount. The advantage is convenience: once you have collected at least ten items, a courier will pick them up from your home without charge.

Hartley Park and Ride

Avoid the stress of driving and parking in the city centre by using Hartley Park and Ride. Leave your car at the Northgate car park, just off the ring road, and catch one of our buses into the centre. Parking is free for anyone who travels on the bus.

When the buses run

From Monday to Saturday, the first bus leaves the car park at 6.45 am and the last bus leaves the city centre at 7.30 pm. On Sundays and public holidays, buses run between 9 am and 6 pm. There is no service on Christmas Day. At busy times (7 to 9.30 am and 4 to 6.30 pm on weekdays), buses run every 10 minutes; at other times they run every 15 minutes. The journey to the central bus station takes about 12 minutes.

Fares

A return ticket costs £3 for adults and £1.50 for children aged 5 to 15. Children under 5 travel free. A family ticket, which covers two adults and up to three children, costs £6. Tickets can be bought from the driver, who accepts both cash and contactless payment, or in advance through the Hartley Buses app. Holders of a senior citizen's bus pass can travel free after 9.30 am.

Other information

The car park is locked at 9 pm, so make sure you return before then; vehicles left overnight may be charged a fee of £40. Cyclists can leave their bikes in secure lockers next to the bus shelter, which can be opened with a code that is sent to their phone. The car park has twenty spaces for electric vehicles, each with its own charging point. All our buses have low floors and space for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Schools and other groups of more than twenty people should contact us at least a week in advance, so that extra buses can be arranged if necessary.
