Walking boots: six of the best

We asked a group of experienced walkers, together with some younger testers, to try out six of this season's boots on a range of routes, from muddy woodland paths to rocky mountain tracks. Here is what they found.

Trailmaster Pro

AThese boots are built for serious hill walkers. The thick rubber soles grip well on wet rock, and the leather uppers will last for years if they are cared for properly. However, they took almost two weeks to break in, and until then they rubbed painfully at the heel. At £180, they are also the most expensive pair we tested.

Ridgeway Lite

BWeighing just 750 grams a pair, these feel more like trainers than boots, and they were comfortable from the first day. They are ideal for well-marked paths in dry weather, but the fabric is not waterproof, so expect to get wet if you walk through long grass after rain.

Fellside Classic

CThis traditional design has been on sale for over thirty years and has hardly changed in that time. The boots are fully waterproof and give good support around the ankle. When the soles eventually wear down, the manufacturer will fit new ones for a small charge, so there is no need to buy a new pair.

Summit Vista

DIf you have wide feet, this could be the boot for you, as it is one of the few models available in three different widths. We liked the quick-lacing system, which uses metal hooks instead of holes, although one of our testers found that the laces came undone rather easily.

Pathfinder Junior

EDesigned for children aged six to twelve, these boots are light, waterproof and cheap enough to replace when your child's feet grow. The bright colours were popular with our young testers, and the reflective strips on the heels are a useful safety feature on dark winter afternoons.

Ecotrek

FMade almost entirely from recycled plastic bottles and old tyres, this boot will appeal to anyone who cares about the environment. It performed reasonably well in our tests, but the soles began to show signs of wear after a few weeks. Note that the sizes are smaller than usual, so you may need to order a size up.

Fernbrook Dental Practice: information for new patients

Registering with the practice

We are currently accepting new patients of all ages. To register, please complete the form on our website or collect one from reception. Once your form has been processed, you will be offered a first appointment, which includes a full check-up and, if necessary, X-rays. New patients are usually seen within three weeks. Please bring a list of any medicines you are taking to this appointment.

Appointments

Routine appointments can be booked online, by phone or in person at reception, and we send a text message reminder two days before each one. If you would prefer to see the same dentist on every visit, please tell the receptionist when you book. If you need to cancel, please give us at least 24 hours' notice. Patients who miss two appointments without letting us know may be removed from our list.

Emergencies

If you have severe toothache or have damaged a tooth in an accident, phone the practice as soon as we open at 8 am, and we will do our best to see you the same day. Outside our opening hours, a recorded message will give you the number of the local emergency dental service. Please do not go to the hospital emergency department with a dental problem unless you also have a serious injury to your face.

Fees

Treatment for children under 18 is free, as it is for adults in certain circumstances, for example during pregnancy. Other adults pay according to a fixed scale of charges, which is displayed in the waiting room, and payment is due at the end of each appointment. We are happy to spread the cost of more expensive treatment, such as crowns, over several months.

Our hygienists

Many problems can be prevented by regular visits to one of our two hygienists, who will clean your teeth and show you how to keep your mouth healthy. You do not need to be referred by a dentist to book an appointment with a hygienist.
