Valley Coaches: summer day trips
Valley Coaches has been running day trips from Hartley for more than forty years. All our coaches are air-conditioned and have toilets on board, and passengers can be picked up from several points around the town. Prices cover travel only, unless otherwise stated.
Ashcombe Castle
ASpend the day exploring Ashcombe Castle, which has been home to the same family for over 600 years. Entry to the castle and its famous rose gardens is included in the price, and a guided tour of the house is available for an extra £5. The coach leaves at 8.30 am and arrives back at 6 pm, and the price is £42.
A day by the sea
BEnjoy a day in the lively seaside resort of Sandmouth, where the coach drops you on the seafront and the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish: on the beach, in the shops or on a boat trip around the bay (not included in the price). We leave at 9 am and return at 7 pm. The price is £25, and children under 12 travel for half price.
Wexley market
CWexley's famous street market, with more than 200 stalls selling everything from local cheeses to antiques, is held only on Wednesdays, which is when this trip runs. On the way, our driver will take you on a short tour of the city and point out the main sights. There will be plenty of time for lunch at one of the many cafés around the market square before we set off for home. Departs 8 am, returns 4 pm. Price: £22.
The Brindle steam railway
DTravel by coach to Brindle station, where you will board a restored steam train for a journey through the hills, with lunch served on board in a 1920s dining carriage. Please tell us about any special dietary requirements when you book. This trip is extremely popular and usually sells out weeks in advance. The coach leaves at 9.30 am and returns at 5.30 pm. Price: £68, including lunch.
An evening at the theatre
ESee the award-winning musical Starlight at the Royal Theatre in Cleveston, with seats in the front half of the stalls. The coach leaves early enough for you to have a meal in the city before the show (this is not included), and we expect to be back at around 11.30 pm. The coach leaves at 4 pm, and the price is £75.

Volunteers wanted
Volunteering is a good way to meet people, learn new skills and help your community at the same time. Here are four local organisations that would be delighted to hear from you.
Hilltop Community Transport
AMany older people in our area have no means of getting to their hospital appointments, and we are looking for volunteers who would be willing to take them there in their own cars. You will be paid for every mile you drive, and you can choose which days you are available. Drivers must be over 21 and must have held a full licence for at least three years. Many of our drivers tell us that the conversations they have on the way are the best part of the job.
Riverside Food Bank
BWe need helpers to sort donations and pack food parcels at our warehouse; no previous experience is necessary, as full training is given on your first day. We are especially keen to hear from people who can help on weekday mornings, when we are busiest. Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they like, and many of them say they have made close friends here.
St Anne's Primary School
CWe are looking for volunteers to listen to children read for one hour a week during term time. All volunteers must have a background check before they start, which the school will arrange and pay for. You do not need any experience of working in a school, just patience and a love of books. Many of our helpers are retired, but we would also welcome younger people who are free during the day.
Phone a Friend
DSome older people living alone can go for days without speaking to anyone. Our volunteers make a weekly phone call to an older person from the comfort of their own home, and calls usually last about half an hour. We will match you with someone who shares your interests, and a coordinator is always available if you need support. Several of our volunteers say that the calls have become one of the highlights of their week.
