Fishing at Westwater Reservoir

Westwater Reservoir offers some of the best fishing in the region, with good numbers of trout and pike. Everyone who fishes at the reservoir must hold a valid permit, which should be carried at all times and shown to our wardens on request.

Permits

Day permits cost £12 and can be bought from the fishing lodge or online. A season permit, which allows unlimited fishing from March to November, costs £180. Young people aged 12 to 17 pay half price, and children under 12 may fish free of charge, provided they are accompanied by an adult with a permit. Permits are not transferable, so they may only be used by the person whose name appears on them.

Opening times

Fishing is permitted from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset; night fishing is not allowed, and fires must not be lit anywhere on the shore. The reservoir is closed to anglers from December to February, when the water is used by large numbers of birds that spend the winter here. Parts of the shore may also be closed at short notice during the breeding season to protect nesting birds.

Boats

Rowing boats can be hired from the lodge by the half day or the full day, and each boat can hold up to three anglers. Life jackets are provided and must be worn at all times while on the water. Privately owned boats are not allowed on the reservoir, as they may introduce plants or animals that could harm its wildlife.

Catches

Anglers may take home up to four trout per visit. All pike must be returned to the water alive. Every catch, including fish that are returned, must be recorded in the book at the lodge before you leave, as this information helps us to monitor the health of the fish population.

Facilities

The lodge has toilets, a small shop selling bait and equipment, and a café, which is open at weekends throughout the season. Free fishing lessons for beginners are held on the first Saturday of every month and must be booked in advance.

Music lessons in Ashford

Always wanted to play an instrument or to sing? Here are four local teachers and groups who are looking for new students this autumn.

Guitar with Sam

AWhether you want to strum a few songs around the campfire or learn to play like your heroes, I can help. I teach children from the age of eight as well as adults, and lessons take place in my studio in the town centre or online, whichever suits you best. If you don't have a guitar yet, I can lend you one for your first month. Lessons cost £20 for half an hour, with a discount if you book ten lessons in advance.

Ashford Piano Studio

BOur experienced teachers prepare students of all ages for graded music examinations, and nearly all of our students pass at the first attempt. Lessons last 30, 45 or 60 minutes and are available on weekdays from 3 pm to 9 pm. Students are expected to practise for at least twenty minutes every day. The studio has three grand pianos, and our students give a concert for family and friends twice a year.

Sing Out!

CSing Out! runs friendly singing groups for adults who would like to sing but have never had the confidence to try. You don't need to be able to read music, and there are no auditions. We sing everything from pop songs to traditional folk music, and many members say they leave each session feeling more relaxed than when they arrived. Groups meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and your first session is free, so there is nothing to lose.

Beat Box Drum School

DDrums are a great way for young people to release energy and build concentration. Our soundproof rooms mean that nobody nearby will be disturbed, however enthusiastic you are. Lessons are available on Saturdays and during the school holidays, and we also run a drumming club for teenagers on Friday evenings. All our teachers are professional musicians who play regularly with bands across the region.
