Suitcases: six of the best
A good suitcase should be light, strong and easy to move, but it also needs to suit the way you travel. We packed, pulled and threw six of this year's most popular cases to find out how they compare.
Voyager 55
AThis compact case meets the size limits for hand luggage on most airlines, so you can take it on board instead of waiting at the baggage carousel. Its four wheels turn in every direction, which makes it easy to steer through crowded airports. The zip on the front pocket broke during our tests, however, so it may not stand up to heavy use.
Atlas Expander
BAn extra zip around the middle allows this case to be made about a quarter larger, which is ideal if you tend to come home with more than you took. It is one of the heavier cases we tested, though, so you may find yourself close to the airline's weight limit before you have packed very much.
Featherlite
CWeighing just 1.8 kilograms, this is the lightest full-sized case on the market, which leaves more of your baggage allowance for the things you actually need. The thin shell is surprisingly strong, and it survived our drop tests without a mark. It is only available in grey, though, which makes it difficult to spot on the carousel.
Nomad Duffel
DPart suitcase, part bag, the Nomad has two wheels and a handle but can also be carried on your back using straps that are hidden in a zipped compartment. This makes it a good choice for travellers who expect to meet stairs, cobbled streets or rough paths. Its soft sides mean that it offers little protection for anything fragile.
Fortress Hardcase
EMade from aluminium, this is the toughest case we tested, and it comes with a built-in lock approved for use on flights to the United States. It is not cheap, but the manufacturer offers a lifetime guarantee and will repair any damage free of charge, no matter how it was caused.
Junior Explorer
FDesigned for children, this small case is shaped like an animal and has a seat on top, so that a tired child can sit on it and be pulled along by a parent. It is light enough for most children to manage on their own and can be personalised with a name label at no extra cost.

Clean Up Kingsford Day
On Saturday 12 April, volunteers across Kingsford will be picking up litter from parks, riverbanks and streets. Last year more than 400 people took part, and this year we hope to beat that number. Everyone is welcome, and you can take part for as long or as short a time as you like.
Where to meet
There are five meeting points around the town, which are listed on the council website. Please register online beforehand so that we know how many people to expect at each one. Volunteers should arrive at 10 am, when a team leader will give a short safety talk and explain which areas need attention.
Equipment
Litter pickers, gloves, high-visibility jackets and rubbish bags will be provided at every meeting point. You are welcome to bring your own litter picker, but please wear the gloves we give you, as they are designed to protect against cuts. We recommend strong shoes and clothing suitable for the weather.
Children
Children are very welcome, but those under 16 must be supervised by an adult at all times. Smaller litter pickers are available for younger volunteers.
Staying safe
Do not pick up anything that could be dangerous, such as broken glass, needles or containers that may hold chemicals. Instead, note their location and tell your team leader, who will report them to the council's specialist team. Volunteers working near the river must stay on the paths and must not climb down the banks.
After the event
Full rubbish bags should be left at the collection points marked on your map; they will be collected by the council on Monday. Please separate bottles and cans from other rubbish if you can, as these will be recycled. At 1 pm, everyone is invited to the town hall for free refreshments. Families, groups of friends and teams from local workplaces can also enter our competition for the most unusual item found, and the winners will be announced there.
